Due to my back being out, I didn't get many photos of our school time last week. We did learn about Animal Homes, though, and specifically the Nest. Our letter was N. We didn't do too much workbook time, but rather some hands on experiments, and we all had fun! Our theme for the week was "God Takes Good Care Of Me" and we talked about how God cares for us, by providing for us just as animals are cared for via their many types of homes. We learned about: Webs, Caves, Nests, Holes and Houses.
Our first experiment was based off of an activity Eli did in his pre-school class. As a class, they read a book about Robins and the materials used to make nests. He came home with a pine cone stuffed full of cotton balls. We hung the pine cone in our front yard and made a chart. I taught the boys about tally marks and throughout the week we watched to see if saw Robins in the yard and in the tree. Eventually, we added additional columns for other types of birds we observed.
We also made our own pine cone bird feeders using peanut butter and bird seed. We also purchased a "real" bird feeder to hang from a tree. We have observed 3 types of birds eating from it: Robins, Black Birds and a small yellow bird we have yet to identify. We went for walks and tried to find bird nests in the trees. Finally, all week we watched this link: Decorah Eagles . We saw the MommyEagle sit on 2 babies and 1 egg... we saw one egg hatch and we saw the Parents feed the babies. All 3 kids LOVED this and we kept it running on the computer every day last week.
