One of the many things I love about home school is that school does not have to begin on any certain day, any particular month, etc. You can start whenever! After much prayer, deliberation, Scripture Searching, and long discussions with Brody we decided to start the boys in a Kindergarten curriculum this spring. Now, I know Korben isn't supposed to start K until fall and Eli just turned 4, so please don't think we are "pushing" the boys to do more or learn more beyond what they are capable both developmentally and emotionally. They love to do school and the K curriculum we settled on is actually meant for 4-5 year olds. You can then make it easier or harder depending on the level of the child. When I talked to the boys about it a couple of weeks ago they were both so excited and wanted to start right away! Really, it's not much "school" but a lot of fun crafts, experiments, etc. that follow themes (or "units") and they learn as they go- without even knowing they're learning! It's also Bible-based which is a huge bonus.
The first 10 days of the curriculum are based on The Creation. A lot of it is teaching letters and numbers, which both boys know, so we are skipping over those sections and will progress through the first 10 days in about 3. I'm adding more "advanced" games and activities and they are requesting to do even more activities so it's been fun so far!
Right now, we are reading Genesis Chapters 1 & 2 and learning about each day of creation. We are making our own "Creation Books" and talking about numerical order (first, second, third, etc.) and writing / tracing Bible verses. They will both retell the creation story using their books by the end of the week. Each day we will school for as long as the boys remain interested. We never push or force them to join in. If neither wants to do school, then we won't do it. Simple. Our first day, though, lasted about 90 minutes. They were both very attentive and kept asking to go on.
